This lovely plot of musical perfection began as an attempt to put all the tracks at the top of Winamp’s ‘Most Played’ list (except those already committed to mixes) in one happy little place. It expanded to include some forgotten gems and some classics begging to be mixed (The Bjork and the Orbital were runners up for MACEWEN). The Orbital song got excised in the recent reversioning. Perhaps it will show up somewhere again. More electronica songs snuck their way into this mix than is the standard with my output, and that is largely intentional because that facet of my listening experience has been largely under-represented… until now! (ooh and ahh, please). And in the end only 4 of the originally slated songs remain. I would say this is probably my most diverse mix so far. There are some strange and wholly wonderful sounds contained within.

In the two weeks before this CD was made I discovered a lot of really amazing new music, mostly of the rock sort of variety. Those make up about half of the tracks here (including all the ones beginning in ‘C’), the others are some songs that have been really important to my listening pleasure in the last several months. The loose idea that started this mix was “Rock in the 2000s” to show all the ‘rock is dead’ people. Of course it stretched beyond that in order to not ignore some songs. Nonetheless all the songs except for tracks 5, 18, and 20 are 5 years old or younger.

Lots of people don’t much like hiphop. My theory is that they just think they don’t and they haven’t heard the really good stuff. The idea behind this CD is basically that. A wide selection of honest to God downright awesome hiphop from most of my favourite hip hop purveyors. So if you like the beats and rhymes already, you’ll hopefully like this, and if you don’t then you can learn something!

This here had its inception because the hiphop mix I was working on was to be a Secret Santa gift for someone whose musical tastes I didn’t know in and out. Not knowing whether he liked hip hop, I figured it would be a good idea to provide an additional CD that would cover the other spectrum of music.. the more guitar and voice side of things, with some variance of course. Turned out very lovely-like, though I had to go back and replace a U2 track (I included it largely because I knew Adam was a huge U2 fan, as well as because I really like it of course) with some Decemberists.

This was my first all out grand production of a mix CD with cover and everything, hours and hours went into it, as is often the case when doing things where computers like to cause errors. It breaks some rules (ie only one song per artist, which is a rule I ignored until basically 2005). I made this mix for Melissa (and perhaps a little for myself as well) when I and she left the proximity of each other and trundled off to McMaster and Queens respectively (that’s where the lame name that i’ve given it comes from). I don’t know if she ever actually listened to the whole thing, but I at least think it is really good. Some really nice transitions, and a lovely little end. The version here is a slightly updated one that I made more recently where Wonderwall by Oasis was replaced with The Devlins.
