SAILING EMERGENT SEAS

Episode 128. mp3. Released July 14, 2012.

As far as invalidating genres, there’s two types of rather divergent ‘garage’ music on here. Mostly though it’s a half of dubby techno and a half of darkish hip hop bookended by proto and posto punkishness. The overall feeling is a bit heavy and unnerving. In a good way of course.

Special shout out to Clams Casino for his production on ‘The Fall’ (and a number of tracks in previous episodes), El-P for his production on Untitled and all of the fantastic R.A.P. Music (and his own track two songs later), and Suicide for showing up to do the original version of the song Neneh Cherry and The Thing covered last time.

CHICKEN IS A CHICKEN IS A SYMBOL IS A DEATH

Episode 127. mp3. Released June 29, 2012.

Just think about the title intently as you listen to each song on this. It will all eventually make sense. No. Not that.

Highlights include: Damon finally pulls out the Mingus, real good groovin’, 2 very hard to beat covers right in a row after the dead boy, plus Dr John’s latest album is everything I could ask for.

TELEGRAMS FROM THE MOTHERSHIP

Episode 126. mp3. Released June 19, 2012.

Dreamy space women, then some tender dubstep and some classic post-punk. Then a couple more dreamy space women.

  • Julia Holter / Our Sorrows / Ekstasis (2012)
  • Iamamiwhoami / Sever / Kin (2012)
  • Fiona Apple / Every Single Night / The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do (2012)
  • St. Vincent / Year Of The Tiger / Strange Mercy (2011)
  • Beach House / Wishes / Bloom (2012)
  • Bear in Heaven / You Do You / Beast Rest Forth Mouth (2009)
  • Peaking Lights / All The Sun That Shines / 936 (2011)
  • Floating Points / Myrtle Avenue / Shadows (2011)
  • Kevin McPhee / I Will / Blue Organ EP (2011)
  • Mim Suleiman / Flava / Tungi (2009)
  • Glasser / Home / Ring (2010)
  • Аукцыон / Огонь / Юла (2011)
  • Colin Stetson / Judges / New History Warfare Vol.2: Judges (2011)
  • Cranes / Everywhere / Forever (1993)
  • Wipers / When It’s Over / Youth of America (1981)
  • Magazine / Shot By Both Sides / Real Life (1978)
  • The XX / Crystalised / XX (2009)
  • Julee Cruise / Into The Night / Floating Into The Night (1989)
  • Ann Peebles / I Can’t Stand the Rain / I Can’t Stand the Rain (1974)

Things to consider:

This mix is best experienced following right after the previous one. I always meant for Julianna and Julia to be neighbours. So if you’ve got 2.7 hours to kill then that’s a winning ticket right there! In your hand! Literally! Don’t lose it!

Gotta love these dreamy space women, right? (ethereal, dream-poppy, spacey girlvocals)

Does Iamamiwhoami rhyme with salami?

Peaking Lights is proggy and noodly but actually good (for at least one song).

There’s not actually any dubstep on here, but that’s just what you call electronic music now, right?

Аукцыон’s English name is Auktyon.

Colin Stetson makes all of his sounds with a bass saxaphone and a bunch of strategically placed microphones. If that’s not sexy…

Julee Cruise’ album was co-written by David Lynch

Before there was Missy Elliot, there was MFing Ann Peebles to not stand the rain, and she (the Peebs) has a discography worth checking out.

I dunno if it’s weird that I kinda have to focus to get a 2:1+ female:male vocal ratio like this. I hope you appreciate it.

Chances of me getting the mic and taking the time to record audio commentary ever again? Dwindly. Though I do miss being a smartass about music.

THE CREEPHAMMER

Episode 122. mp3. Released January 21, 2012.

Ugh. This isn’t music. It’s like the same thing over and over again. And then all this.. what is that sound! This is all vaguely unsettling. But. Uhh hurting my ears. That incessant… banging! It’s annoying. Can you turn it off? I can’t even tell what that guy is saying, it’s so distorted and cut up. Is it important? Is this what you call dubstep? Ok that’s a bit funky. But there’s no way I can last more than 1 minute of any song. You should just get the itunes samples and mix those together. It would be over sooner. Dzh! Dzsh! Dzsh! How are you even supposed to dance to this? I feel like I’m on drugs. Hrm. That’s a little better. Oh no. Oh no. Could you at least turn it down? That sounds a lot like Blade Runner but worse. What! Trance music? Huh. Well, at least the last 3.5 songs are almost tolerable. Please just do some straight up indie rock next time.

NOCTURNE IN DAY MAJOR

Episode 121. mp3. Released December 05, 2011.

Cheezy synthsophone introduces a liquid languid squiddy sent surreal sandwich (Sp? Sic!). A layer of dark and purple spooky glowing tentacles under a layer of bright and pulsing sunshine ventricles. A sauce made of tears, heath gas and the sweat off forlorn entrails. All of this rapped between a solid old school kaiser top and a fresh twisted hip hop beat or two. Ingredients harvested fresh from the solitary rays of sunshine at the edge of a nightmare.

What?

I know this sounds pretty fucked up, but it’s actually pretty incredible. Dive in, yo!

DO DO DO DO THE CRUMPSTON.

Episode 120. mp3. Released October 29, 2011.

You are at a raucous party hosted by a troupe of schizophrenic gnomes who can’t stop hitting things and tossing multicolored rags at you amidst unintelligible freakouts. The host, J-jjj-johntanon, demonstrates how everything in the world is a drum and it doesn’t matter if you have to shatter it to make it beat. The guests join in and the cacophony is thrilling.

Later, things get weird.

The rest of the night is a tesselated gaussian blur.

As the autumn sun rises faint pink, you find yourself lying on the driveway covered in a layer of frost. Tears you can’t remember crying are frozen to your cheeks.

You realize that somewhere around 5:14am you became self-actualized.
